Spiritual healing: Author Chopra weighs in on health care reform

When spiritualist and best-selling author Deepak Chopra talks health care reform, he doesn't use Washington words like "public option" and "pre-existing condition."

Instead he shows concern for unnecessary surgeries and prescription drug addiction, something that plagued his close friend, fallen pop star Michael Jackson.

"I guess in Washington one of the hardest topics of discussion is health care reform," Chopra said Monday night. "And nobody is actually talking about health care reform, we are talking about health care insurance reform."

Chopra spent Monday at an intimate dinner at K Street favorite Teatro Goldoni with journalists -- including Posties Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn -- where he shared lessons learned from his 59th book, "Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul: How To Create a New You." And because this is Washington, he also gave his prescription on how the government could help improve the medical community.

"I think we need to have physicians that are employed by the government who are ethical, who know the facts and who can police the medical profession," Chopra said. "Unless that's done from within the medical profession, it won't happen," he added.

Chopra came to hold this view, in part, because he was deeply disturbed by what happened to Jackson. He condemned enabling doctors in Hollywood who write prescriptions for stars using various pseudonyms. But he said the problem stretched far outside Los Angeles.

"The No. 1 source of drug addiction in the world is not street drugs, but medical prescriptions," he told Yeas & Nays. That's where he said he envisioned the feds stepping in.

"They already have drug enforcement departments, right?" Chopra asked.

And though Chopra was skeptical of the content of the current health care conversation, he still gave President Obama a thumbs-up.

"I think President Obama is doing the best he can, given the so many special interest groups in Washington," Chopra said. "I think President Obama didn't realize he would be surrounded by mafia."

Hi Peter,

I think he is correct when saying that the doctors need to stop participating in the mad race of more drugs and more machines and more money to the medical industry. they need to honestly and seriously commit to the vow of helping the patient to the best of their capacity- and that capacity/understanding HAS to increase by actively learning new ways.

I also believe that patients need to stop participating in this mad race and take responsibility for their lives. Putting oneself in the hands of doctors like powerless packages in need of fixing... is absurd today, when so much information exists about how to create and keep one's health. Health care is first and foremost every person's basic desire and responsibility. So let's stop putting it last on our own list and then blaming everyone for the results.

So if both doctors and patients wake up... then things will change. I'm optimistic, because I see it already happening in so many.

Two excellent quotes here: "nobody is actually talking about health care reform, we are talking about health care insurance reform."

and

"I think President Obama didn't realize he would be surrounded by mafia." (LOL - so true)

With regard to the 2nd statement, I would not agree with more gov't involvement and oversight of doc's. Too corrupt, too much special interest - too many mobsters.

Gracias for your rational response! Yes, the widespread corruption and deceit in government and electoral politics turns off many good people to engaging in any kind of politically-tinged community work. I see politics as one major way of helping to raise consciousness. I believe in compassionate action, get involved in connected reality and support balancing our belief-systems by putting our bodies, minds and spirits out front ~ manifesting our humane principles with our daily practices.

Health care is a basic humane right. I work in a homeless Emergency Shelter where we have an Interim Care Project where homeless people are referred by and brought in direct from the local hospital to mend as we seek housing for them in these troubled times..

I also work with recovering drug addicts seeking progressive recovery. It can be hard battle but we must take courage, be bold in our beliefs and struggle to help others. And yes there must be real struggles involving sacrifices of our personal time, energy and natural resources.

Maybe some just want to contemplate their navels, rest content in nirvana bliss and are satisfied with an accumulation esoteric knowledge, yet remain divided by delusions. Every day I see and work with the poor, the hungry and those in need on an existential level. I know that ultimately it is a matter of raising spirits, advancing consciousness, enhancing self-esteem and reaching out to others with compassionate action.

So many New Agers degenerate into being liberal sympathetic folks without the active empathy of local community involvement. This is part of why so many regular folks are turned off to New Age ideas and ideals. We need to be relevant to connected reality, share the many beautiful ideas being espoused by the Alliance for a New Humanity and respond to the basic survival needs of the people, including spiritual needs. We should activate our beings by 'being' into spiritual-energy education!
