Please check out the trailer for my new documentary "Children of Congo: From War to Witches"
Over five million people have died during the past decade as a result of the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Few people are aware of the unimaginable scale of human suffering, death, and destruction that has occurred in this vast country deep in the heart of Africa. In the aftermath of this brutal war, children have endured the brunt of the suffering. This 67 minute film documents the plight of thousands of street children living in Kinshasa and confirms the wide-spread accusations of child witchcraft, torture and child prostitution. The film also examines the efforts to reintegrate demobilized child soldiers, displaced refugees, and orphaned children following the eruption of the massive Nyiragongo volcano, near the city of Goma in Eastern Congo. These heroic efforts are finally bringing some measure of hope and stability to the lives of the Congolese people.
I enjoyed the trailer as such it is portrayed. I have friends from Nigeria, Rwanda, Zaire and several other African countries that have been part of what I consider a reclamation of Africa by Africans. It has not been an easy transition for many as both tribal culture and religious factions have taken up arms. There is another situation where larger nations have come to Africa to 'harvest' and leave little or nothing for the local cultures.
I myself am a 'product of' similar situation here in the United States where initially my european families started arriving in 1602, 1603 and continuing later. During the first 200 - 300 years, we had wives only from the tribal and indigenous cultures of the east coast and then further inland as time bore on. My mom is considered a direct descendant of the Cherokee nation as the line of females was not broken, excepting her, with 6 sons. I have two very strong sets of cultures INside of me that get resolved somehow. In the ending of this situation in Africa (especially your viewing in this) there will be similar melding, the unknowns, the untouchables and those who just 'gave up'. Yet, there will be those, who for some reason, survive, show us a future that is healthy, vibrant and filled with joy. It may seem hard to imagine at this point in time, but it is a better place to 'see' this future for these people.
IF it is true that the African peoples are the oldest of all of our cultures, they have stuff of Life that none of the rest of us have had to survive for as long as they have. I encourage you to continue, find the heart that is shared and fully express the 'heart of all that is' (a-da-nv-to, cherokee) in your work.
Dan keep on doing what you think is what you have to do. I am in alliance for a new humanity seeking... I live in Venezuela, and things are not easy at the moment...We have to work where we are needed with what we know.. Thank you for inviting me to watch this trailer. It is really well made and highlights the very sad and serious situation that is occurring. It also shows what is being done and what can be done to help.
