We can meet our match with a poodle or with a raging guard dog, but the interesting question is--what happens next. Generally speaking, we regard discomfort in any form as bad news. But from practitioners or spiritual warriors--people who have a certain hunger to know what is true--feelings like disappointment, embarrassment, irritation, resentment, anger, jealousy, and fear, instead of being bad news, are actually very clear moments that teach us where it is that we're holding back. They teach us to "perk up" and "lean in" when we feel we'd rather collapse and back away.
They're like messengers that show us, with terrifying clarity, exactly where we're stuck. This very moment is the perfect teacher, and, lucky for us, it's with us wherever we are.
Those events and people in our lives who trigger our unresolved issues could be regarded as good news. We don't have to go hunting for anything. We don't need to try to create situations in which we reach our limit. They occur all by themselves, with clockwork regularity. Each day, we're given many opportunities to open up or shut down. The most precious opportunity presents itself when we come to the place where we think we can't handle whatever is happening. It's too much. It's gone too far. We feel bad about ourselves. There's no way we can manipulate the situation to make ourselves come out looking good. No matter how hard we try, it just won't work.
Basically, life has just nailed us. It's as if you just looked at yourself in the mirror, and you saw a gorilla. The mirror's there; it's showing you, and what you see looks bad. That being nailed by life, the place where you have no choice except to embrace what's happening or push it away. Most of us do not take these situations as teachings. We feel we have to soften it, pad it with something, and we become addicted to whatever it is that seems to ease the pain. In fact, the rampant materialism that we see in the world stems from this moment. There are many ways that we have dreamt up to entertain us away from the moment, soften its hard edge, deaden it so we don't have to feel the full impact of the pain that arises when we cannot manipulate the situation to make us come out looking fine. Meditation is an invitation to notice when we reach our limit and to not get carried away by hope and fear. Through meditation, we're able to see clearly what's going on with our thoughts and emotions, and we can also let them go. What's encouraging about meditation is that even if we shut down, we can no longer shut down in ignorance. We're able to see how we run and hide and keep ourselves busy so that we never have to let our hearts be penetrated. And we're also able to see how we could open and relax.
The Ultimate Truth....I am THAT, Thou are THAT, all this is THAT. And That is all there is!
We must stop seeing THAT as separate from ourselves, and you as separate from each other. The only solution is the Ultimate Truth: nothing exists in the universe that is isolated, separate from anything else. Everything is intrinsically connected, irrevocably interdependent, interactive, interwoven into the fabric of all of life.
There are many tendencies and beliefs stored in our subconscious our individual tendencies and beliefs as well as the Totality; all of which are presently unknown to us. Yet there is a thrust from within our psychological complex that drives us to act because of them. This emerges as a blind belief, an emotional outburst or sometimes even a fanatic outrage. At other times it is simply a determination to do or not do. Somewhere from within us a force or voice is creating these tendencies. Very few of us want to know what these tendencies are, to culture this knowledge of ourselves. The majority are simply victims or slaves of their tendencies, not knowing or reflecting why and where they come from or what purpose they serve. The Sanskrit word for them is uppadhi the pre-recorded impressions or modifications of the mind, as explained in Raja Yoga. Unless we understand these tendencies, probe into them, analyze, auto-reflect and so on, we do so many things ignorantly or unconsciously.
The main purpose of Raja Yoga is how to culture the raw material of the human mind, how to bring out its hidden tendencies, how to purify and free the subconscious mind. In order to know the Ultimate God, Light, Bliss we have to know all the compartments of our own mind. True knowledge is in the Superconsciousness. Unless we know our conscious and subconscious mind we cannot really fly or reach the joy of abandonment Superconsciousness.
We see dreams within dreams and think we are awake. The mind's projection is like the ocean; it is not limitless but because we do not see the other shore it seems that way. It encompasses everything from A to Z. And for the time being I am including meditation in this play as well, although that is the last door you will go through in order to come out of the mind. Otherwise any analysis, projection, path, belief, or ism is within the mind. Therefore we do not harp much upon differences of paths and beliefs because we are talking mind within mind, blindly groping in the dark. We are touching the same elephant. I may be touching the tail, and you may be touching the ear or stomach, but if we start fighting or analyzing or discussing or comparing one part with another, we never realize that it is the same animal. We are touching with the same mind, distinguishing and deliberating.
There are few souls on this earth who stand back and are the observer, the object of observation, and observed all at the same time, or who stand apart and watch this hypnotism. We call them wise men. All our conferences and seminars are within the same dreams. In the dreamland we meet each other and go on discussing our present happenings. And by morning everyone is back in the bottle. Very few are awakened. The Awakened Ones travel into our dreamland and tell you, You are joined by a silver cord with your bottle and you are talking in your dreams but you are not aware. Since you are not aware, since you are one with your self-hypnotism, naturally you think this guy is crazy.
There is a line: In this mad world only the mad are sane. Sleeping souls think Awakened Ones are crazy or if not crazy, at least beyond our limits. To them the Enlightened One looks impractical so we do not do what he does, as if it does not apply to us. But you cannot say that you believe in an Enlightened Being and then do whatever you want. You are canceling the whole thing.
There are certain qualities of the Perfected Ones that are universal. You keep dreaming, though hoping, but hoping is a part of the mind. Hoping is not a spiritual quality faith is. Hoping has doubt ingrained in it. Therefore belief, when it matures, becomes faith. Belief has its own limits; it cannot lead you to the Goal. If the belief is wrong, at some point it will shatter. That will make you rethink and move forward. Every coin has two sides, and so has belief. Where it is genuine, it fulfills you. Sometimes your belief shatters because ego does not get what it wants. That is self-delusion, an ego-trip. But genuine belief leads you to a certain juncture where you can pick up the thread further to faith and faith to Realization, to Enlightenment.
