- About Me:
- I live in Scotland Im 48 yrs old, I have a son, I work as community development worker for a voluntary organisation which encompasses all sorts of community work.
Im also doing my degree with the University of Glasgow in Community Learning and Development, im in my third and final year now.
Prior to that I was intensively involved in community volunteering for around 10 years. I worked closely with other volunteers to develop a support service for families that are affected by their loved ones addiciton to heroin.
We started off as a group of mothers who had experinced first hand impact affect of heroin addition with our own children. There was no support available for the whole family so together we formed our own support group, by supporting eachother.
This lack of support helped us identify a great need for a support service for families affected by substance misuse.
Our collective pro-activley campaingned for change by lobbling parliment getting the opinions of families heard to those in power.
We generated all lot of interest from politicions, police, social services, media...we became high profile. The police at one stage gave us a room to host our support group, they also supported us and helped us to apply for funding from local and national goverment. e eventually secured our own building where to opperate our fast grewing service. We secured funding to help us acheive our aims and objectives.
We worked with many agencies and supported new groups to form. We supported thousands of families over the years to come to terms with addicition.
My vision from the outset of becoming involved was to be able to develop a complimentary therapy project to help ease and cope with the suffering these families were going through.
Why? because I had explored therapies to come to terms with my beloved sons addiction, when I discovered he was using heroin he was 15 years old, hes 26 now.
I wanted for these families to have the opportunity to experience aholistic way of dealing with addiction...to be able heal their life.
In the meantime I continued to support the project through maning the 24 our 24 hour helplind, addministration, reating and publishing posters...the list is endless. But one thing I know is I wouldn't change my experience for anything...it helped grow spiritualy emotional, every which way that si possible to grow. I call my road to enlightenment.
This experience has taught so much about my strengths and ablities and how resilient the human spirt is. It was just another learning curve for me, to get me to where I needed to be, and to understand fully what others go through...but my whole has been about these kind of experience...I call my life my university ha ha...but now I am at University and studying and exploring the many theories...the one thing I believe is without the real experience, what I read in books will never compensate for the real experience.
I've tested out many of the theories and my training gives me the opportunity to look at them and how they work in practice.
The one thing that stays with me and that I believe in is a holistic approach to learning, living, educating and being. This is my approach in all that I do but every day there is something new to learn some new teacher caomes into my life...its just awesome.
